Authorities have identified the driver of a moped who struck a parked police cruiser, then was fatally struck by another motorist early Thursday on the Isle of Palms Connector.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office says 51-year-old Phillip Wallace from Mount Pleasant died as a result of blunt force trauma.

He was pronounced dead at 5:53 a.m.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the accident happened at approximately 5:13 a.m. Thursday.

Troopers say the victim was driving a moped on the connector when he hit the back of an Isle of Palms Police cruiser that was parked on the shoulder of the road.

The victim was then thrown into the roadway where he was fatally struck by another driver who did not see him.

Authorities were on scene investigating, and the connector had been closed in all directions.
