Wanted: Man steals car as driver unloads items on Johns Island

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County detectives are attempting to identify a man who was caught on camera taking off with a car while the driver was unloading items on Johns Island.

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say the incident happened on Oct. 4 when a deputy responded to Triad Mechanic Contractors on 3674 Old Charleston Highway for a report of a theft of a car.

The victim said a man took off with her 2013 black Ford Escape, and was last seen in the direction of Dodges Chicken; several deputies patrolled the area but found nothing.

The woman said she had parked her vehicle running with the doors unlocked and the keys inside.

She said she then saw a man get in the driver's seat and drive away with the vehicle.

The victim said the vehicle was in her mother-in-law's name.

According to the victim, a red air compressor and assorted tools were in the vehicle.

Authorities describe the suspect as a white male, 5'11", 35 to 45 years old, a tatooed left arm, with a bush brown beard and wearing sunglasses, a white T-shirt and camouflage cargo pants.
