City of Charleston launches produce stand to fill downtown BI-LO void

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Good news for people living on Charleston's east side now that the BI-LO grocery store is closed.

Officials with the City of Charleston announced on Wednesday that this Saturday the Eastside Produce at Hampstead Square will open.

They will operate from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The square is across Columbus Street from the basketball court.

The stand will feature fresh fruits and vegetables.

"The produce stand will begin with two local produce vendors, Joseph Fields Farm and Oliver Freeman Farm. Joseph Fields Farm offers a variety of local produce including Certified Organic produce and accepts cash, credit or debit cards, SNAP/EBT and Senior Vouchers. Oliver Freeman Farm also offers a variety of local produce and accepts cash, credit or debit cards, SNAP/EBT (Healthy Bucks), WIC, Senior Vouchers," officials said.

“The sudden closing of the Meeting Street Bi-Lo left our East Side residents without a convenient way to purchase fresh produce," Mayor John Tecklenburg said."We knew we had to move quickly to find a solution, and I am happy to announce that Eastside Produce @ Hampstead Square will soon begin providing our citizens quick and easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables every Saturday and Tuesday.”
