Beloved Burke High School coach laid to rest

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A community gathered to say goodbye to a beloved former Burke High school football coach.

Born on Sept. 6, 1928, Modie Risher, Sr. was an educator and coach for more than three decades after playing professional baseball.

Risher became one of the most success multi-sport coaches in school history, leading the Bulldogs to the 1955 South Carolina AAA state football championship.

He passed away on Oct. 17 at 88 years old.  

Risher's funeral was held at Morris Brown AME Church in downtown Charleston.  

Hundreds celebrated his life in the Burke gymnasium named in his honor Sunday.
