MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - Santee Cooper will start spraying Environmental Protection Agency-approved herbicides to control invasive cutgrass in lakes Marion and Moultrie.
According to a statement from the company, helicopters will spray the herbicides from Oct. 25 through Nov. 7.
Officials say the spraying should improve lake access for residential and commercial properties as well as recreational opportunities and wildlife habitats within the Santee Cooper Lakes system.
Lake users are asked to avoid the following areas during these operations:
- Clarendon County: Elliott's Tree Line, Bee Tree Lake, Houseboat Slough, areas adjacent to Hickory Top Wildlife Management Area to the navigable channels north and northeast of Persanti Island, isolated areas within the Pine Island Unit and Cuddo Unit of the Santee National Wildlife Refuge
- Berkeley County: Crappie Neck, Pintail Island, Bass Island, backwater areas south of Cross subdivision, backwater areas adjacent to Quattlebaum slough and Sandy Beach, and areas within the Jungle east of Raccoon Island
