TAKE A STAND: Clown Scares

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - What's up with the spooky clown scare phenomenon?  It started a few months ago with strange sightings across the country.

Then there were sightings in the Upstate with reports of people dressed as clowns trying to lure children into the woods.

This week, an alert was issued at Charleston Southern University, after police say a female student was chased by a suspect in a clown mask armed with a knife.  Thankfully, no one was hurt.

This has gotten out of hand, and it's especially spooky as Halloween approaches.

Some cities and stores have banned clown costumes, which if you think about it, really isn't fair to legitimate law-abiding clowns.

What's behind the hysteria? Anytime something goes viral and gets a lot of attention, it gets copied and repeated over and over.  Whether it's hype, prank, someone's idea of a joke or something more sinister, it's definitely not funny.

This can be summed up in five words.  Time to knock it off.
