CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have cleared the scene after investigating a suspicious package found near a news conference Monday.
Officers found a bag by a fountain at Marion Square. They found the owner of the bag shortly after and cleared the scene.
Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, leaders of the National Action Network, NAACP, Charleston Police and area chaplains gathered at the park at 11 a.m. to stress peace as the trials of ex-North Charleston Cop Michael Slager and accused Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof continue.
Officials said security measures would be increased to ensure the safety of the public as the high-profile trials are held.
