HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) - Hanahan police have arrested a man in connection with the discovery of a body found stuffed inside a closet at a Hanahan apartment.

Michael Patrick Strait, Jr., has been arrested and will be charged with murder, Hanahan Police Chief Dennis Turner said.

Police responded to an apartment in the 5000 block of Mabeline Drive at approximately 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for a welfare check and found a woman's body, Turner said. Investigators say they determined the woman was the victim of a homicide.

The victim was identified as Melanie Rivera, 39, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. He said Rivera's body had been there for more than 24 hours.

Police said Strait was Rivera's boyfriend.

Hanahan Police, the Berkeley County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating the death.

Salisbury said an autopsy will be conducted Thursday.

Strait was being held in the Berkeley County Detention Center pending the service of an arrest warrant and a bond hearing is to follow, Turner said.
