A family is thankful to be alive after their home caught fire on Crystal View Cove near Hickory Hill Road early Thursday morning.

Firefighters rushed to the scene around 5:15 a.m. It took them about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

A neighbor, who is a former volunteer firefighter, said she saw the fire early Thursday. She ran over and pounded on the door to wake up the family inside the burning home.

Daisa Bonner woke up when she heard the loud knocking.

"The first thing I noticed when I came out of my room was that there was a light coming from the carport,” Bonner said.

That light was the family’s car on fire. Four people inside, including Daisa and her mom, rushed outside upon waking up.

"When I first saw them (the flames), they were three feet high,” the neighbor said. “The time I got the people out, the whole carport was involved."

The neighbor, who did not want to be identified, called 911 after waking the family up. Firefighters showed up a short time later.

"I did what anybody else would have done,” she said.

The family may be lucky that their neighbor was there to help.

"The fire detectors didn't go off until everybody was out of the house,” Bonner said. “That was kind of scary."

The family is now looking for a new place to live, but have a stronger relationship with their neighbor.

"It'll definitely be a little more closer now that she saved my life,” Bonner said.
