NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The Charleston Area Justice Ministry is pushing for change in two local police departments.
The group wants the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division to conduct a patterns or practices investigation into the North Charleston Police Department. A CRD investigation reviews whether a police department has engaged in a pattern or practice of discriminatory or unconstitutional policing, the CAJM says. Results of a CRD investigation may prompt a written agreement with the police department and local officials that could be monitored by a federal court to ensure compliance.
The DOJ is currently conducting a study of the department through its Community-Oriented Policing Services Office. A COPS study offers recommendations to law enforcement leaders to improve trust between police and communities, the CAJM says.
The activists are also calling for the City of Charleston to conduct and independent, external investigation of their police department's policies.
The calls came during a news conference Monday morning.
The Justice Department has already reviewed to North Charleston police department at the city's request.
