CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Results for a competency evaluation of the man charged in the shooting deaths of nine people at a Charleston church in June 2015 were expected to be delivered to a judge Tuesday.
Dylann Roof is facing 33 federal charges in the June 17, 2015, shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church.
The psychologist who examined Roof was expected to complete his report Tuesday and those results will be the topic of a hearing on Thursday.
Judge Richard Gergel has not yet decided whether the hearing will be open to the public.
Roof's attorneys have filed a request t be allowed to file briefs after the hearing which, if granted, could further delay jury selection, which is scheduled to resume on Monday.
The trial began on Nov. 7, but the process of jury selection was called to an abrupt halt when Gergel announced a last-minute motion required his immediate attention. After a closed-door motion hearing later that morning, he said jury selection was to have resumed the day after Election Day.
But the next day, Gergel said Roof was undergoing a competency evaluation and pushed it back until Nov. 21.
