CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Deputies have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting in Hollywood.
Robert Campbell, 41, is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime, according to jail records.
Charleston County deputies responded to a report of shots fired on WIlltown Road in Hollywood at approximately 6 p.m. on Oct. 15 where they found an unoccupied truck with multiple bullet holes. The truck had struck a nearby tree.
The driver of the truck, later identified by the coroner as 26-year-old Wayne Bennett of Walterboro, had been taken to St. Paul's Fire Department by another person who found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Bennett was transported to MUSC where he died.
A witness told deputies they saw Campbell in possession of a firearm and shooting at Bennett's truck as he was attempting to leave the scene and said Campbell was standing in the area where .40 caliber shell casings were recovered by investigators, according to an affidavit.
During the first few days of the investigation, the detective received "several tips" that Campbell was the shooter during the incident, the affidavit states.
Campbell was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon.
