CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston County coroner identified the man who died following an altercation with Charleston County deputies in Ladson on Sunday.

Michael Alan Sawyer, 31, of Berkeley County, died at Trident Medical Center, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Sheila Williams said. The autopsy results are pending, she said.

Deputies responded at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday to a report of a man acting erratically and walking in the middle of Highway 78 near Pinewood Drive in Ladson, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson.

"Somehow this individual was able to retrieve or get a hold of one of our deputies baton. Struck both of our deputies and altercation ensued," Watson said.

Authorities say a deputy was able to deploy a Taser but they don't know if it worked because it didn't stop the suspect.

Authorities said roughly six to 10 bystanders jumped in to help the deputies restrain the suspect.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the circumstances of the altercation.
