One taken to hospital for mental evaluation after hours-long standoff

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Summerville Police say a several-hours-long standoff at a motel has ended and one person is being taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

Officers were investigating an incident at the Hamilton Motel on South Main Street, according to Summerville Police Lt. Nick Santanna. The Mobile Crisis Unit has also responded, he said.

Police said in a tweet that he or she has a "known mental disorder" and asked people to avoid the area. Officers say they entered the person's motel room and used "less than lethal" equipment.

Witnesses reported a heavy police presence in the area since about 11 a.m. Summerville officers reported the incident was resolved after 2 p.m.
