BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a man is in custody after he drove his truck into a number of vehicles, then stole an SUV and crashed into more cars causing multiple injuries in the Sangaree area Monday evening.

The incident began in the area of Highway 17-A and Myers Road where a F-150 crashed into vehicles and became disabled.

According to officials with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, the driver then stole a black Chevrolet Tahoe, fled and then crashed into two more vehicles and then a pole.

"Add to this, it was during the evening rush hour and there were multiple injuries," BCSO officials said.

"We are glad that we caught the person and have removed their ability to hurt any more people," BCSO officials said in a Facebook post.

According to witnesses, the incident started with a chase and ended in two wrecks along Highway 17-A near KFC around 5:14 p.m.

Traffic was being affected as crews worked the scene.

Authorities had shut down a portion of the road which has since been re-opened.

The Highway Patrol and crews with the fire department also responded.

"The traffic rerouting could have been done more efficiently and we apologize for any delays that this caused," BCSO officials said."We had everyone we could out on the scene and there were there were other agencies involved but it was ultimately our scene."

More information is expected to be released on Tuesday.
