Mount Pleasant police searched an area around Mathis Ferry Road late Thursday night after shots were apparently fired at one of their officers.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:51 p.m. when a Mount Pleasant officer was getting out of his car in the 1100 block of Mathis Ferry Road, according to Mount Pleasant Police Inspector Chip Googe.

"We don't know if it the shots were directed at him," Googe said. "It could have been a coincidence that it happened just as he was getting out of his car. We haven't found a suspect so we don't know for sure."

The officer heard the distinct sound of two shots from a rifle, Googe said. The officer also reported hearing what he believed was a bullet going through threes approximately 20 feet over his head.

Back-up officers thoroughly searched the area but found no suspects or shell casings, Googe said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Charleston County Consolidated Dispatch at 843-743-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
