Police investigating after fatal accident on IOP Connector, lanes now back open

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

Police with the Mount Pleasant Police Department are investigating after a fatal wreck closed the IOP Connector for several hours.

On Sunday, at approximately 4:08 p.m., officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the Isle of Palms Connector and Riviera Drive in reference to a collision.

A motorcycle was heading towards the Isle of Palms on the connector when a vehicle turned left off of Riviera Drive into the path of the motorcycle and was struck by the motorcycle in the area of the driver’s door, police say.

The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead on the scene and the driver of the vehicle was transported to MUSC.

After a little over three hours, lanes on the Isle of Palms Connector are back open, police say.

Dispatch confirms that Riviera Road in the area was closed in both directions for several hours.

Police say that the IOP Connector was completely closed at the time of the accident. Motorist needed to drive through Sullivan's Island to get to the Ben Sawyer bridge.
