CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a 32-year-old man exclaimed "I did!" as responding deputies were attempting to find a suspect who shot a woman in the head in West Ashley.
Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested Ralph Gilliard and charged him with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
Gilliard's charges stems from an incident that happened Saturday night when deputies responded to Hazel Road for a report of a shooting.
As deputies were approaching the home, they saw someone, later identified as Gilliard, walk across the roadway towards them.
One of the deputies said he then told the person to put his hands up and asked,"Who shot, who was shooting?"
A report states Gilliard replied,"I did!"
When the deputy asked him who he had shot, Gilliard said,"They are on the ground in front of the house."
Charleston police crews found the victim on the ground. The responding deputy said he could not see a bullet wound but could tell she had been shot in the face.
An incident report states the suspect showed authorities where the gun was located which was lying in a leaf pile near a tree in the front yard.
According to reports, Gilliard and the woman, identified as his girlfriend, were arguing.
The verbal dispute escalated and resulted in Gilliard shooting the woman in the head, deputies say.
The victim was transported by Charleston County Emergency Medical Service to the Medical University of South Carolina to be treated for her injuries.
