NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston city employee who earns $76,000 a year has been allowed to live rent-free in a city-owned house for six years because the city never made the employee sign a lease and simply forgot about it.
And the employee never bothered to remind them.
Now the city is trying to clean up this mess. The employee has agreed to pay back rent, and the city has agreed to make her sign a lease.
Shouldn't the real question be how in the world did this happen in the first place?
City government should not be in the business of providing free rent to anyone, especially one of its own employees.
Let's hope North Charleston gets its business in order, takes a very close look at the books, and makes certain it hasn't missed or forgotten anything else.
