SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A teacher at Summerville High School has been arrested, and is accused of assaulting a student in the classroom.

James Gregory Elliott is charged with third degree assault. The alleged assault happened on December 7.

Elliott is also the Summerville boys' basketball coach.

Elliott is currently free on bond.

A Dorchester District 2 spokeswoman said, "Immediately upon learning of a classroom incident between a student and teacher at Summerville High, administration reported the incident to local law enforcement.  The district has placed the teacher on administrative leave with pay while the incident is being investigated.  In addition, the district is cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigation of the incident."
