GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Georgetown deputies are warning the public about scammers attempting to take advantage of potential sellers on websites like Craigslist.
Deputies have received reports of people pretending to be "interested buyers" who inquire about motorcycles for sale. The callers set up appointments to see and test drive motorcycles, then defraud the owner by not returning after the test drive, Sheriff A. Lane Cribb said.
"Although social media is a commonly used tool to buy or sell, it can also be a perfect way for scammers to take advantage of citizens," Lane said in a statement.
Anyone who receives a call from someone interested in purchasing a motor vehicle listed for sale should be cautious, he said. Anyone with concerns should contact their local law enforcement, Lane said.
