SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Investigators have arrested a Summerville man accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office charged 48-year-old Robert Joseph Berardi with first-degree criminal sexual assault.
Authorities say Berardi was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he was identified and located by Summerville police.
Berardi's arrest stems from an incident on Dec. 15, 2016 when the victim's mother received a video message from Berardi showing her daughter engaged in a sexual act.
The mother said Berardi was a friend of hers and babysits her daughter.
The mother reported that Berardi sent the video through Facebook messenger.
A report states that Berardi sent the video to the mother by mistake.
The victim told investigators that Berardi would force her to take off her clothes and touch herself inappropriately, and would promise to buy her toys.
According to the victim, when Berardi sexually assaulted her, he recorded the act on his phone.
The victim told authorities that Berardi said if she told her mother, she would be taken away and her mother would go to jail.
