JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Local law enforcement is warning parents to check the apps on your child's cell phone. Some innocent looking social media sites could lead to their abduction and ultimately becoming victims in the sex trafficking trade.

"It's spiking everywhere," said Sgt. Kenny Bryant with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. "Children are coming up missing".

At a checkpoint in Jackson Wednesday night, Hinds County Deputies were raising awareness about human trafficking. While stopping vehicles they were looking for abducted minors forced into the sex trade.

Human and sex trafficking are on the rise thanks in part to APPS that kids download and use to talk with friends.

"They get on these social media sites and they, I guess, make friends with people, and then all of a sudden they come up missing," added Bryant.

Apps like Kik, Whisper, Partyline and Periscope are used to talk with friends. Authorities say pimps also use them to build relationships.

"They will ultimately kidnap them," said Sex Trafficking expert Jody Dyess with FREE International.

Dyess spent the week conducting sex and human trafficking training with the Clinton Fire Department.

He told firefighters and responders that traffickers target minors 12 to 14 years old. The session included various resources used to reach minors.

"There are apps that are dangerous because they're GPS located, and live time like Periscope," said Dyess.

Traffickers use Periscope and Partyline to track the adolescents and teenagers who speak freely on the social media sites.

"Like the old school party lines back in the day where everyone could just pick up the phone and hear conversations going on, and it's a videotape app where you could see videos among others which is really dangerous for live time sexting and things of that nature," added Dyess.

Be aware that some apps can be disguised as a calculator.

Experts recommend that you know each piece of technology your child is using and all sites they visit.
