CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - U.S. News and World Report released its annual Top 10 Best States Rankings report. For South Carolina, there's good news and bad news.
First the good news: for a strong economy, the Palmetto States ranks 16th in the nation. That's pretty good. It's no secret business is good, especially here in the Lowcountry.
But outside of business, the news is not good, not good at all.
When it comes to education, South Carolina ranks 50th; that's dead last in the country. We're not much better for opportunity, coming in at 48th. Infrastructure? That's roads, bridges and services, we rank 43rd. South Carolina ranks 41st in the country for crime and 39th for health care.
While we're proud of South Carolina's strong economy, we should be equally embarrassed at how low we rank in these other, just as important categories.
Out of all 50 states, South Carolina only ranked higher than New Mexico, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
It's time for our elected officials to examine priorities. And the time to do that is now.
