NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Mercedes-Benz Vans says it has made significant progress in its expansion to a full-scale production plant for the next generation Sprinter large fans with the placement of a steel beam.
That beam was placed Wednesday into the paint shop structure at its Ladson facility, spokesperson Alyssa Bean said, bearing the signatures of the MBV team members and Yates Construction team members and subcontractors. It was the final beam to be put into place in the structure.
By April, nearly all of the new plant buildings are expected to be enclosed from weather.
The current production area and administration building of the North Charleston assembly plant covers 409,000 square feet, but the new facility will additionally cover approximately 1.1 million square feet and a 2.8 million square-foot yard for finished vehicles, she said.
The new plant, which represents a total investment of approximately $500 million, will create up to 1,300 jobs with production planned to begin before the end of the decade, plant officials say.
