COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency officials say two men survived after a tractor trailer crashed into a bridge in Colleton County Friday morning.
The accident happened on the northbound lanes of I-95 at the 55 mile marker.
Colleton County Fire and Rescue officials say after the truck struck a bridge it went down an embankment into the median.
The tractor trailer then struck several trees before coming to rest in the swamp.
"The front of the trailer failed, propelling the load of cabbage onto the cab, destroying the truck and trapping the two occupants," CCFR officials said.
A report states a SC Transport Police Officer drove up on the accident shortly after it happened and was able to pull one of the people from the wreckage.
"Firefighter-Paramedics deployed ladders to reach the second the occupant who was trapped approximately 15 feet above the ground," CCFR officials said."Crews dug through mounts of cabbage, then used hand tools to free the driver. He was extricated with the use of a stokes basket."
Both of the people inside the truck suffered multiple traumatic injuries and were transported to Colleton Medical Center.
The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
