COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A large workshop along with several vehicles were destroyed in a fire in Walterboro.

The fire happened on Wednesday on 2257 Mount Carmel Road.

A caller told emergency officials that a trash fire had gotten out of control and spread to the building.

Officials with Colleton County Fire and Rescue say as crews were working the fire, a series of explosions occurred in the building which quickly spread the fire throughout the structure.

"Responding units could see a thick plume of black smoke five miles away," CCFR officials said.

Firefighters worked for 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

According to CCFR officials, several vehicles including a dump truck were damaged or destroyed.

"The building was completely destroyed," CCFR officials said."A tractor, some farm implements and several thousand dollars’ worth of tools were also destroyed."

A report states the building housed several vehicles and was used to repair equipment and trucks.
