MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Multiple warming shelters are opening this week to provide those in need a place to shelter from cold weather.

North Charleston

The Aldersgate Winter Warming Shelter will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, spokesperson Carolyn Amaro said.

The shelter is located at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, at 1444 Remount Road. The shelter will be open from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. the following day.

Shelter workers recently held a fundraiser that allowed them to purchase 50 new cots and sleeping pads, Amaro said.

Also, the Hibben UMC Emergency Cold Shelter will open its doors Wednesday night because of cold weather forecast for that night.

Hibben guests will be offered a safe, warm place to sleep overnight plus an evening meal and breakfast. Showers are available with towels, soap, and shampoo furnished. The location is 690 Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant.

The doors will open at approximately 7:30 p.m. and the guests must leave by 7 a.m. the next morning.

No guests will be accepted after 11 p.m. unless they are brought by the MPPD, other agencies, or due to special circumstances and advance arrangements have been made.

A Hibben bus will pick up guests in downtown Charleston starting at 6:55 p.m. at Huger Street across from Taco Boy. It will then proceed to the Main Library on Calhoun Street, Marion Square at King Street, and then the Museum on Meeting Street before returning to Hibben UMC about 8:00pm. Guests will be returned to the downtown area the next morning.

Warmer temperatures are predicted Thursday.

The Hibben UMC Facebook page will also post days when the HECS will be open. The cold shelter has only been open 4 days during this cold season due to much warmer weather than in previous years.

Berkeley County is opening two warming shelters in Summerville on Wednesday night as well.

Fresh Anointing Ministries, at 551 Myers Road; and Ridge Baptist Church, at 2168 Ridge Church Road; will both be open from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday, Berkeley County spokesperson Hannah Moseley said.

Transportation will be provided for those going to Ridge Baptist Church from the following locations:

  • College Park/17-A Hotspot (by Hardee's Drive-thru) at 7 p.m.
  • Bus station across from VS on 17-A at 7:15 p.m.
  • Bi-Lo in Sangaree at 7:30 p.m.

Both warming centers will provide a hot meal for dinner, a bed for the evening and breakfast Thursday morning.
