WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) -

The National Action Network plans to file a federal lawsuit to change the method of electing Walterboro City Council members.

That word came Wednesday morning during a news conference announcing the formation of a NAN chapter in Colleton County.

State NAN President Elder James Johnson said there are no blacks on city council.

He said city council members are currently elected at large, and
NAN is calling for single-member district elections.

"There's 59 percent blacks and 39 percent whites and we don't have any representation, that's what we're talking about," Johnson said. "But we are also looking at the county."

Johnson says NAN is talking to attorneys now about a date to file the suit.
