Report: Fight leads to shootout at Berkeley County home

RIDGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a fight between two people led to a gunbattle which killed one man and injured another.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened at a home on the 200 block of Garden Court in Ridgeville.

The shooting left 23-year-old Ishmel Rivers dead and injured Diamonte Evans.

A BCSO report states Rivers started a fight and fired at Evans. A friend of Evans then fired back and struck Rivers, according to deputies.

Deputies responded to the home for a report of a shooting in which two people were hit by gunfire.

When deputies arrived they were told told that one of the victims had been transported to Summerville Medical Center for treatment.

Deputies found the second victim, Rivers, at the home.

Rivers was found lying in the yard, according to the incident report.

When asked who shot him, Rivers mentioned a person with the last name "Crosby," authorities said.

Rivers was transported to Trident Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Two pistols were found on a cinder block on the scene.

Detectives say they then made contact with the other shooting victim, identified as Evans, and three acquaintances at Summerville Medical Center.

The witnesses said Rivers had driven to Evans' home where he began a verbal altercation.

A report states Rivers then pulled out two handguns and shot Evans in the shoulder.

According to the witnesses, an acquaintance of Evans' pulled out a handgun and struck Rivers.

"The initial investigation and evidence indicates that the acquaintance was acting in self defense when Rivers began firing at Evans which was also toward the acquaintance who fired at Rivers," BCSO officials said.

The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation.
