Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury has ruled a shooting in Ridgeville was justifiable homicide.

Officials say the man who shot and killed 23-year-old Ishmel Rivers in Ridgeville earlier this week was apparently acting in self-defense.

Rivers met with three others at a home on Garden Court Sunday, according to Salisbury. After a brief argument, he shot one person in the shoulder.

Salisbury says one of the others pulled his gun and fired, hitting Rivers four times.

Deputies say Rivers had been out of prison for just two months. Records show he had just completed a prison term for involuntary manslaughter in a 2012 shooting.

Rivers died at a North Charleston hospital shortly after the incident.
