Former People Against Rape bookkeeper gets prison time for forgery

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A former bookkeeper for the organization People Against Rape has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for forgery.

Joyce Fotheringham pleaded guilty to the charge on March 16.

She was given credit for 136 days already served in jail, according to court records.

Prosecutors say Fortheringham falsified grant documents in excess of $50,000 between January, 2010 and 2012 while she was employed by PAR.

Investigators say she showed records for reimbursement for grant funds to the organization's executive director for expenses that were not paid.

The State Law Enforcement Division launched an investigation in September 2012 into alleged misspent money at People Against Rape after its board said up to $80,000 was missing from its budget.

The discovery of the missing funds led PAR's board to contact the Internal Revenue Service to perform an audit.
