CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police say the man accused of shooting at a car Thursday night in West Ashley surrendered to deputies Friday morning.

Willie Carlton Kemmerlin, 49, of Ridgeville, surrendered to Dorchester County deputies and is now in the custody of Charleston Police, spokesman Charles Francis said.

Kemmerlin is charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Francis said.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday after Kemmerlin's former girlfriend and a male friend left a Sam Rittenburg Boulevard restaurant. Investigators say she drove down Sam Rittenburg Boulevard toward Orleans Road and Kemmerlin followed her car.

Kemmerlin reportedly passed several vehicles and followed her to the intersection of Rittenburg and Sumar Drive where they both stopped for traffic, then exited his vehicle armed with a handgun and fired several shots at the victim's car.

The woman and her passenger were able to drive away without injury, but her vehicle was struck by bullets, Francis said.

The investigation is ongoing.
