COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have scheduled an autopsy for the decomposed body found under a house near Walterboro Sunday.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said the autopsy will be performed Wednesday. Authorities will likely have to rely on dental records to identify the body.
A homeowner alerted authorities to the body found under a home on the 7000 block of Pleasant Grove Road in Round O, Colleton County Sheriff's Lt. Tyger Benton said.
Deputies responded at 11:25 a.m., an incident report states.
Deputies say the owner of an unoccupied home called 911 after she discovered some of the weatherproofing on the rear of the home had been removed and then spotted what appeared to be a pair of shoes. Upon taking a closer look, she realized the shoes were on a body lying in a sleeping bag, the report states.
Benton said the body was badly decomposed and that the gender is unknown at this time. He also said it appeared the body had been there for quite some time.
The homeowner had returned to the home to retrieve a ladder when she made the discovery, the report states. She told deputies she had not lived there since 2011.
Benton said the body was sent to MUSC for an autopsy.
