COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Colleton County Fire and Rescue say a woods fire destroyed a home and has burned approximately 100 acres.
Colleton County Fire Rescue received the first report of a house fire at 3 p.m. Friday from a neighbor who saw smoke and called 911, Colleton County Fire Rescue Director Barry McRoy said.
Crews arrived at the home in the 9700 block of Sidney Road to find the house fully engulfed and a rapidly-moving woods fire spreading to the north.
The state's Forestry Department was requested and a second alarm was issued, McRoy said.
High winds and dry conditions contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, he said.
Additional fire units were sent to protect homes in the path of the fire. No other homes were damaged, he said.
Fire Rescue had 20 fire units assigned to the fire and Forestry had 6 tractors, a Ranger and an airplane.
Friday's fire was the second woods fire in Colleton County in five days' time. A woods fire on Monday in the area of Robertson and Howe Roads was caused by outdoor burning but was reported contained that afternoon.
