NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Thousands of runners and their families turned out Friday to the North Charleston Convention Center for the 40th Cooper River Bridge Run Health and Wellness Expo.
Local businesses from all over the area showcased some of their products geared towards racers ahead of the big day.
"For the most part, they've all enjoyed it," said Stephanie Meadows, owner of Scales Cocktails. "I think because of it being low calorie and lower in sodium, that they're choosing to partake."
Not only did beverages flow, but runners also loaded up on carbs ahead of tomorrow.
"It's fantastic," said Patterson, of Charlotte, North Carolina. "All of the vendors are great, everyone I've met has been great, the merchandise is fantastic and there's incredible deals on all sorts of race stuff."
Bridge Run officials say the expo is one of the largest in the country, even surpassing the Boston Marathon.
As a result the expo is manned by thousands of volunteers from all over the Lowcountry and beyond!
"Everybody is so friendly," said Peter Torrey, of Great Britain. "So many more people smile and say good morning to you in the street."
Torrey crossed the pond from London to volunteer. He said keeping runners relaxed at the expo and on race day is key.
"I'm there encouraging the runners to look up, smile, hands up, smile or grimace, it looks the same in the picture," he said
Of course each runner takes part in the Bridge Run for various reasons.
"This is my first big race after an injury," said Maureen Butwin, of Myrtle Beach. "I've done half marathons, but I'll have my team mount a shirt on for my mom, in support of the brain aneurysm foundation... So I'm doing it for my mom and I've got it!"
230 exhibitors showcased their product at the expo this year.
