Cougars Blank UNCW, 2-0, To Seal Series Win

Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) and Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) combined for eight strikeouts and scattered six hits to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 2-0 shutout of UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletics Association play on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.

The win keeps College of Charleston (12-15, 4-1 CAA) tied with Elon atop the CAA standings, while UNC Wilmington falls to 11-14 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Cougars plated two runs on five hits, while limiting the Seahawks to six base knocks in the program’s first shutout since a 6-0 blanking of William and Mary on May 21 of last season.

Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) continued his hot-hitting with a 2-for-4 day to raise his batting average to .347 on the year, while Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Sisk posted his first quality start of the season with six and two-third shutout innings, while White struck out six in two and one-third frames to earn his first save of the year.

Brian Mims paced the Seahawk offense with a 2-for-3 effort, as Seahawk starter Logan Beehler surrendered two runs on five hits and struck out two in seven and one-third innings. Austin Warren recorded two outs in the eighth out of the bullpen.

The Cougars got the board with a run in the third, after Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.) and Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) both reached to open the inning. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, before a wild pitch on ball four to McRae allowed Morgan to come in from third to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

Charleston would add an insurance run in the fifth, doubling the advantage to 2-0 after Roper singled to left and McRae rung a double off the left field wall to score Roper from first.

Sisk did not allow a runner past second in six and two-thirds innings of work, and only faced multiple base runners once. White would enter with two outs in the seventh and shut the door, striking out six of the nine batters he faced – including the side in the ninth to earn his first save as a Cougar.

The Cougars will go for the weekend sweep against the Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:03 pm at Patriots Point, with CofC freshman Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) taking the ball against UNCW freshman Zarion Sharpe.
