CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Mother Emanuel church shooter Dylan Roof will plead guilty to state charges and avoid another death penalty trial.
That news has been met with mixed reaction.
Even though he has already been sentenced to death after being convicted on federal charges, some are concerned, because federal death penalty cases have a history of sometimes being overturned.
But a guilty plea in the state trial, which means Dylan Roof will be sentenced to life in prison, is the right decision. It's the right decision to not put the victims' families through another long, painful and gut-wrenching trial.
The federal death sentence takes precedence, but even if it were reversed, Dylan Roof will never, ever see the light of day. He will never hurt anyone else.
The healing will never stop, but hopefully, the legal proceedings will, and one day, we can stop saying his name once and for all.
