Tuesday night the Berkeley County School Board moved forward in its search for the next superintendent after former Superintendent Brenda Blackburn resigned last month following a special board meeting on the financial investigation of the district.
Earlier this year, the district fired its chief financial officer after he was accused of taking nearly 400 thousand dollars from the district.

The nationwide search for the new head of schools is expected to come to an end by September 1. The board preferred that the new superintendent have a Doctorate degree and come with a Superintendent background.

The firm heading the new search has some ties to the Berkeley County School District.
Anthony Parker of Harper, Parker and Associates will lead the search. Parker was a former Berkeley County Superintendent.

Parker left the district in 2011 and was replaced by Rodney Thompson. The former superintendent Thompson pleaded guilty to ethics violations after he and former Communications Director Amy Kovach were indicted for using government resources to influence the 2012 Yes for Schools campaign.
The board also approved the district's 2017-18 school year calendar.
The calendar has students heading back to school on August 17 and the calendar shows students will be off August 21 off for the solar eclipse.
The school board also gave a first reading to the 2018-19 school year calendar in an effort to try and let parents make plans well in advance.
