Woman charged after burned animal carcass found

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A woman in the Green Pond community of Colleton County has been charged with animal cruelty after the discovery of a burned animal carcass.

Niffatina Coppadge is facing a charge of animal cruelty in connection with an investigation that began on March 24, Colleton County Sheriff's Lt. Tyger Benton said.

Colleton County deputies responded to Hendersonville Elementary School in reference to a possible animal cruelty call, he said.

Deputies spoke with a school staff member and a juvenile, and that prompted deputies and the county's Animal Control department to respond to a home in the 1000 block of Bowers Road in Green Pond.

The deputy and officer found a freshly-dug hole containing a burned animal carcass inside, Benton said.

It is not clear what kind of animal was killed.

Deputies are continuing the investigation to determine whether further charges are warranted, he said.
