Cougars double up Dukes to even series

Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) drove in two with an eighth-inning triple, and Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) went eight and two-thirds innings to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to an 8-4 win over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday evening.

With the win and an Elon loss, College of Charleston (15-16, 6-2 CAA) takes sole possession of first place in the CAA standings, while James Madison falls to 17-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Cougars plated eight runs on 12 hits – including a pair of home runs – while limiting James Madison to four tallies on 10 base knocks.

Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) paced the offense with a 3-for-5 effort, and drove in three runs with a three-run home run. Hart and Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) each picked up two hits as Hart pushed across two runs. Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) launched his team-leading ninth home run of the season to move into a tie for first in the conference, Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) and Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) each plated a run.

Sisk fell one out short of going the distance in his fourth win of the season, as the sophomore southpaw allowed three earned runs on nine hits and struck out three in eight and two-thirds innings. Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.) recorded the final out of the night with a strikeout.

Josh Wyatt went 3-for-4 and drove in a run, while Mike Sciorra tallied two hits with an RBI. Adam Sisk and Jack Hammer each plated one. Colton Harlow got the start and pitched into the sixth, allowing one earned run on eight hits and striking out six in five and two-thirds. Matt Colon tossed one and one-third scoreless frames, while Matt Marsili surrendered two runs in the eighth to take the loss. Christian Bourne and Cam Vassar combined to pitch the ninth.

The Dukes took the early lead in the bottom of the first after Parrott led off with a walk, advanced to third on a Cougar miscue, and scored on a sac fly by Adam Sisk to give JMU a 1-0 advantage. James Madison extended the margin to 3-0 in the second following back-to-back RBI singles from Hammer and Sciorra.

McRae brought the Cougars back within two in the fourth, when the slugging sophomore launched a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right for a leadoff homer. After Dixon reached on an error and Xavier Freeman (New Lima, Okla.) singled to third, Sechopoulos tagged a 0-1 delivery to right center for a go-ahead, three-run home run to put the Cougars in front, 4-3.

Wyatt would even the tally at 4-4 with an RBI single in the sixth, which scored Adam Sisk from third. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth, when Hart delivered in the clutch with a two-out, two-run triple off the wall in right to put the Cougars ahead, 6-4. Wondrack pushed the advantage to 7-4 with a two-out double in the ninth, before Mundy singled up the middle to plate Wondrack and stretch the margin to 8-4.

The Cougars and Dukes will meet in the rubber game of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
