Folly Beach approves new rules for beach yoga

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Folly Beach leaders held a special workshop Tuesday evening to explore possible regulations for fitness and yoga lessons on the beach.
While Folly Beach does allow limited activity on the beach for residents and visitors, city documents indicate there have been an increase number of requests by businesses to offer classes on the beach. As a result, city council will review a proposed resolution Thursday that would establish standard for fitness and yoga lessons beach side. The new rules include the following:

  • All teachers must obtain a Folly Beach business license
  • All teachers must obtain permission from City Council before beginning lessons
  • Lessons may only have forty students per class
  • Lessons must only be held in specific locations outside of 3rd East to 3rd West
  • Businesses shall not teach more than ten hours per week
  • There will be no classes between 10 a.m and 6 p.m on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Each business must hold liability insurance in the amount of $1,000,000

Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms currently do not allow any commercial business on the beach.
