Bulldogs Slip Late in 6-4 Loss at Winthrop

The Citadel baseball team was defeated 6-4 at Winthrop on Tuesday night despite leading for five and a half innings.

The Bulldogs (10-20, 2-4 SoCon) got off to a quick start, opening the scoring in the second inning after Ben Peden led off with a double. Peden moved over to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI ground out by Joe Sabatini.

Jonathan Sabo crushed his seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot scoring William Kinney in the third inning to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 3-0. Winthrop scored a run in the fourth and fifth inning to cut The Citadel’s lead to one run.

In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs added back to their lead after another double by Peden. The first baseman later scored on a wild pitch by the Eagles.

Winthrop answered back in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out on two singles and a hit-by-pitch. With the benefit of two Bulldog errors, the Eagles put up three runs to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. Winthrop closed out the game with a run in the eighth to grab the 6-4 victory.

Alex Bialakis made the start, throwing five innings with two runs allowed. The sophomore right hander left the ball game in line for the win after recording four strikeouts.

Peden paced the offense with two of the team’s four hits. The sophomore scored two runs and posted two doubles. Sabo and Cole Buffington recorded the Bulldogs’ other two hits.
