Jalen Stevens, a linebacker who spent the past four seasons at UConn, is transferring to The Citadel and will be immediately eligible for the 2017 season as a graduate transfer.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jalen into our program as he returns home to play in front of his family and friends,” head coach Brent Thompson said. “He will help us solidify an area of need with the graduation of two starting linebackers from last year’s team and will provide experienced leadership for the 2017 season. We have had success integrating graduate transfers into our program the last few years, and Jalen has all of the qualities we look for when those opportunities arise.”
Stevens appeared in five games during his time at UConn. He redshirted in 2013 before making his collegiate debut in 2014 at USF and seeing action in the Huskies’ 40-13 victory at UCF during his sophomore season. He appeared in three games, earning a start against Cincinnati, as a junior during the 2016 campaign and recorded one solo tackle at Houston.
Stevens is a Lowcountry native who graduated from Goose Creek High School, where he helped lead the Gators to the Class AAAA-Division II state championship as a junior. He collected 126 tackles, including six sacks, as a senior to earn all-county honors and help Goose Creek to a perfect season.
The Citadel begins its 2017 season with two straight home games, facing Newberry on Sept. 2 in the season opener before hosting Presbyterian on Sept. 9. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN3.
