The Citadel loses late at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -

The Citadel baseball team came back from an early 4-0 deficit, but fell late 7-4 in the rubber game at Samford on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (11-22, 3-6 SoCon) rallied back from down 4-0 with runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.William Kinney kick started the offense with a solo home run, his second bomb in as many days.

In the seventh, Taylor Cothran and Clay Martin came through with RBI singles to pull the Bulldogs within a run. Then in the eighth inning, Ben Peden mashed a solo home run to even the score at four runs apiece.

After being held scoreless for three straight innings, Samford answered back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to reclaim the lead 7-4.

Peden led the offense with a 2-for-4 game, which included the game-tying solo home run in the eighth. Peden finished 5-for-10 in the series to lead the Bulldogs. Six other players accounted for The Citadel's final six hits of the game.

Alex Bialakis made the start, allowing three runs over 2.1 innings in the no decision. Jordan Busterallowed one run in 1.1 innings in relief. Kyle Smith threw a scoreless inning in a crucial spot in the fifth inning, stranding the bases loaded with no outs.

The Bulldogs returns home for the following five games, hosting Charleston Southern on Tuesday and SoCon leading Mercer in a three-game series April 21-23.
