Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) and Riley Knudsen (Cabot, Ark.) each homered to supply the offense, as the College of Charleston baseball team fell to Northeastern, 6-3, in the finale of a Colonial Athletic Association series on Sunday afternoon.
With the result, Northeastern (16-16, 9-3 CAA) opens a two-game lead on the College of Charleston (17-19, 7-5 CAA) in the CAA standings, as the Cougars fall into a tie for third with Delaware (20-14, 7-5 CAA). The Huskies plated six runs on 13 hits – including three for extra bases – while the Cougars pushed across three runs on four base knocks.
Roper drove in two runs with a two-run home run – his sixth of the season – while Knudsen launched a solo shot for his second long ball as a Cougar. Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) each picked up a base knock.
Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) surrendered four runs and struck out three in five innings of work to take the loss, while Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed three frames in relief while allowing two runs on four hits and fanned four.
Scott Holzwasser paced the Husky offense with a 2-for-3 day, scoring two runs and driving in two more with an inside-the-park home run in the eighth. Mason Koppens picked up three hits, while Pat Madigan drove in one with a 2-for-4 day and Cam Hanley and Nick Fanneron each tallied an RBI.
Brian Christian went seven innings and allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out six to pick up his fifth win of the season. Kyle Murphy tossed a scoreless eighth, and Andrew Misiaszek worked around two inherited runners to record the save.
The Cougars drew first blood in the opening inning, when Hart reached with a one-out single and scored on Roper’s two-run bomb to right that gave The College an early 2-0 lead. Northeastern countered with a two-run third to even the tally at 2-2 following an RBI groundout by Hanley and a double from Fanneron.
An RBI single from McConnell plated Holzwasser in the fourth to put the Huskies in front, 3-2. Northeastern doubled the advantage to 4-2 in the sixth, when Max Burt led off the inning with a two-bagger and Madigan drove him in with a single to right.
Knudsen pulled the Cougars back within one with a leadoff home run in the eighth to cut the lead to 4-3. Northeastern answered with two in the home half after Holzwasser bounced one off the wall in left center for a two-run, inside -the-park home run to push the lead to 6-3.
The Cougars threatened to rally in the ninth with back-to-back leadoff walks by Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) and Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.). Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) then reached on a fielder’s choice, and McRae was forced out at second to put runners on the corners with one out. Misiaszek settled down from there, forcing a fly out to shallow left for the second out, before a grounder to first ended the threat and the game.
Charleston will return the diamond on Wednesday when the Cougars welcome defending national champion Coastal Carolina to Patriots Point for a midweek matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
