NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) -

Authorities are investigating after a North Charleston man was shot in a home invasion.

Officers were called to the 5700 block of Nelson Street Tuesday just before 1:30 a.m. They arrived to find a man lying behind the front door of his apartment with a gunshot wound to one of his legs, and a woman and child in a back bedroom.

According to an incident report, a couple was lying in bed and their child was asleep in the living room when they heard someone hitting their door.

The man went to investigate as the woman grabbed the child, the report states. She was heading to a bedroom when she heard a gunshot.

The victim said once he got to the door, someone kicked it in and shot him once before fleeing. The man was able to tell the woman to call 911.

Detectives found a .45-caliber shell casing by the steps of the apartment.

The man could not provide a description of the suspect or suspects involved.
