Outfielder Carlos Vidal drilled a triple over the head of Asheville center fielder Manny Melendez to drive in a pair as the Charleston RiverDogs walked off for the third time this season, winning it 4-3 over the Tourists on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 4,448 at Riley Park.

Charleston’s walk off victory capped the sixth come from behind victory of the season for Charleston (9-6) who now sit a game back on Rome, tied for second place in the Southern Division in the South Atlantic League standings.

The Tourists (6-9) got on the board right away in the top on the first inning. Shortstop Jose Gomez singled and stole second. Vince Fernandez drove a base hit into right field to bring in Gomez. Back-to-back strikeouts by Charleston starter Jio Orozco limited it to any further damage.

The RiverDogs had an opportunity to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning as they loaded the bases with one out, but failed to take advantage.

Asheville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Gomez knocked a solo home run to left field.

Gomez again would score a run to make it 3-0 Asheville in the fifth inning. After the infielder singled to right to start the inning, Colton Welker flied out to the warning track in left deep enough to score Gomez from third.

The RiverDogs finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Angel Aguilar reached on a single to right field and a throwing error by Willlie Abreu (RF) gave Aguilar second base. With two outs, Oswaldo Cabrera came up big with an RBI single into center field.

Charleston got one more in the bottom of the seventh as some small ball action brought one home. Isiah Gilliam led off the inning with a walk and was advanced to third by some sacrifice infield put outs. With two outs, Hoy Jun Park singled into left field that brought around Gilliam that made it 3-2.

Trevor Lane (3-0, 0.00) came in for relief in the 7th inning and pitched around a couple of jams to record three scoreless. The southpaw struck out four to keep it at 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth.

Oakley (0-1, 1.42) came in to try to close the game as Charleston rallied. With one out, Leonardo Molina reached on an error on a routine ground ball to short for Gomez. Gilliam followed with a walk and Vidal came up with two on and one out. With a full count, the Colombian hit a line drive to dead center that got over Melendez’s head and brought around the winning runs.

The loss for the Tourists was their fourth in a row. The RiverDogs snapped a two-game skid and have now twice trailed heading into the ninth inning and pulled away with a win.
