Balanced Offense Paces Cougars To 11-2 Win Over Elon Friday

MT. PLEASANT, SC -

Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.) drove in three, and Xavier Freeman (New Lima, Okla.) launched his third home run in a week to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to an 11-2 series-opening win over Elon in Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday evening at Patriots Point.

The victory moves the College of Charleston (21-21, 11-5 CAA) three wins ahead of William and Mary and UNC Wilmington, and two clear of Delaware and Elon (19-23, 9-7 CAA) in the conference standings. Charleston plated 11 runs on 13 hits – including four for extra bases – while limiting Elon to two runs on four base knocks.

Freeman and Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) each collected three hits, as Mundy plated three runs with a 2-for-4 night at the dish. Ereven Roper (Easley, S.C.) added two doubles to push his season total to 12, as seven Cougars recorded at least one RBI.

Bailey Ober (Charlotte, N.C.) surrendered two runs on three hits, and struck out four in five innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. The victory also gives him sole possession of sixth place on the program’s all-time wins list with 22. Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) struck out three in two scoreless frames, while Justin Baker (Huntersville, N.C.) and Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the win.

Ty Adcock and Hayden Platt each drove in a run to pace the Elon offense, as Joe Satterfield reached on two walks. Ryan Conroy allowed five earned runs on nine hits in five and one-third innings to take the loss. Sean Byrnes surrendered three earned runs on four base knocks in two and one-third frames, as Derek Pike recorded one out in the eighth.

The Cougars opened the scoring with a two-run third, as Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) drove in Mundy with a fielder’s choice before Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) plated Freeman to give the College an early 2-0 lead. Elon evened the tally at 2-2 in the fourth with an RBI single by Adcock, and a sac fly from Platt that scored Ogren.

Freeman continued his torrid hitting in the fifth, when he sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left for a solo homer to put the Cougars back on top, 3-2. A three-run fifth would push the lead to 6-2, as Roper plated Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) with a double and Mundy scored two with a two-bagger later in the frame.

The Cougars added five in the eighth, as Mundy and Freeman notched back-to-back RBI singles and Sechopoulos drove in one with a double to right. A bases loaded walk to Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) capped the scoring for the night, as McLarty pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the 11-2 win.

Charleston and Elon will square off in game two of the weekend set on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point. First pitch is set for 2:30 pm, and will feature the two top starting pitchers in conference play this season – Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) for the Cougars, and Kyle Brnovich for Elon.
