CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon held a press conference on Thursday on the policies of law enforcement chases.
This comes after a series of police chases in the Lowcountry including one that left a suspect dead.
Cannon said there are no specific sets of rules that work in all cases.
The sheriff says every police pursuit is different and more often than not, it comes down to how the suspect reacts.
"The person that is fleeing police officers or the person that draws the gun or barrels out of a car and runs away has a tremendous influence over what we do," Cannon said."They dictate the actions that we take sometimes."
In a Charleston County pursuit last week, deputies recovered a safe stolen from a restaurant and crack cocaine inside the suspect vehicle once the chase ended.
Sheriff Al Cannon responded to questions Thursday about multiple high-speed chases that occurred in the area over recent weeks.
